DOSE-EFFECTIVE LEVELS OF NUTRIENTS
When SuperNutrition was founded in 1977, there were only about 3,000 scientific studies researching the effectiveness of higher potencies of vitamins and minerals. Today there are over 20,000 studies in the National Library of Medicine showing that increased potencies of vitamins and minerals lead to increased effectiveness and great health benefits. This growing body of independent research suggests that the critical element for effectiveness is not the nutrient form or carrier but the specific effective dosage level. SuperNutrition supplies potencies that have been shown to be far more effective than the RDA or other lower doses. The science that confirms the principle of dose-effectiveness set the stage in natural foods stores for specific sections dedicated to particular health concerns (structure/function), i.e. bone health, immunity, etc.
Definition of USP Vitamins and Minerals - Industry Standard for Purity
All vitamins and mineral forms manufactured and sold in the United States are manufactured according to standards of purity and safety set by the U.S. government. The United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) issues these standards. The term "USP" refers to all vitamins and mineral forms manufactured and sold in the United States regardless of subsequent processing with foods and other minerals. USP vitamins and minerals are biochemically identical to the vitamins and minerals found in food and absorb equally.
EXAMPLES OF NUTRIENT DOSE-EFFECTIVENESSFolic AcidReduced circulating homocysteine |
||||||||||||||
High levels of circulating homocysteine are a major risk factor for heart disease. In people with nearly normal levels of circulating homocysteine, increased folic acid combined with varying doses of vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 lowered homocysteine in a dose-effective manner in three different studies.1,2,3 These studies show that the effective range for benefits increases as potency increases. |

Vitamin DReduced number of bone fractures |

A major review of scientific studies since 1960 found that 700-800 IU of supplemental vitamin D reduced bone fractures 23% to 26%, while 400 IU was not sufficient for fracture prevention.5 Optimal vitamin D status can increase Calcium absorption by as much as 50%.6 |

SuperNutrition's Women's Blend, Men's Blend, Super Blend, Perfect Family, PreNatal Blend, Opti-Energy Pack, Menopause Multiple and Calcium Blend contain 1,000 IU of vitamin D.We use vitamin D3 instead of D2 because it has been shown in scientific studies to be over three times more effective than vitamin D2.7 Furthermore, vitamin D2 is made from yeast, a common allergen, which we do not use in our multi-vitamins. |

Vitamin EReduced LDL oxidation |
||||||||||||||
Vitamin E is one of the body's main protectors against increased oxidation rates. Increased oxidation rates are involved in many of the major diseases, including heart disease. Two studies taken together showed that increasing doses of vitamin E progressively decreased the oxidation of LDL cholesterol that can precede the formation of plaque in the arteries.8,9 |

In these studies, the optimally effective range for reducing LDL oxidation is between 400 and 800 IU of vitamin E. SuperNutrition's full potency multi-vitamin formulas contain either 400 or 800 IU of vitamin E. |

Vitamin CImproved bone densityA three year study showed that senior women who took 1,000 to 5,000 mg of supplemental vitamin C per day had 5% greater spinal bone density than women who took 500 mg or less.10 |

SuperNutrition's Women's Blend, Perfect Family, PreNatal Blend and Calcium Blend contains 1,000 mg of vitamin C.SuperNutrition's Opti-Energy Pack and Menopause Multiple contain 1,200 mg and 1,500 mg of vitamin C, respectively. |

Vitamin B6Reduced premenstrual symptoms |

A study of 630 women showed a dose-effective relationship between vitamin B6 and reduced premenstrual symptoms.11 The optimally effective range in this study for reducing premenstrual symptoms is 160 to 200 mg of vitamin B6. |

SuperNutrition's Women's Blend contains 200 mg of Vitamin B6. |

CalciumOptimal Dose - Improved Bone Density |

A two year placebo-controlled study of postmenopausal women consuming an average daily calcium intake (*683 mg) showed that those who received only their dietary calcium had 3% bone loss. When 345 mg of calcium was added in the form of four glasses of milk per day (for a total of 1,028 mg of calcium) bone loss dropped to only 1.5%. Those who supplemented with 1,000 mg of calcium as calcium carbonate (for a total of 1,683 mg of calcium) regrew 3.7% of their spinal bone density and 3% of their hip bone density.12 |

Another study of senior women and men showed "...supplemented intakes (of calcium) of 1,300 to 1,700 mg per day have been shown to arrest age-related bone loss and to reduce fracture risk in people 65 and older."13 SuperNutrition's Menopause Multiple contains 1,500 mg of calcium. |

Baby's bones - Calcium and improved bone densityA double-blind placebo controlled study of 256 pregnant women showed that for women who get less than 600 mg of dietary calcium daily, supplementing 1,200 mg or more of calcium can improve their baby's bone density by approximately 15%.14 |

SuperNutrition's PreNatal Blend contains 1,200 mg of calcium. |

A Note About Calcium Carbonate & Calcium CitrateWe include both calcium carbonate and calcium citrate with a higher percentage of calcium carbonate because calcium carbonate requires half as many tablets and is less expensive to the consumer. In addition, scientific research shows that both forms are absorbed equally well when taken with food.15 We recommend taking tablets containing calcium with food to slow down the transit time in the digestive track, which increases calcium absorption as much as 30%.16 |
